Therapy is a broad term that covers both physical and mental health fields. On the other hand, psychotherapy specifically targets mental health.
Psychotherapy and counselling may seem similar, often used interchangeably by practitioners without clear distinctions. They both leverage similar theories to bring about change, but there are some variations:
Psychotherapy primarily addresses diagnosed or potentially diagnosable mental health issues like depression, anxiety, mood disorders, and ADHD. It can involve medication and guidance from a medical professional. Psychotherapy is typically long-term but can also incorporate successful short-term interventions.
Counseling focuses on problem-solving and enhancing quality of life, utilizing techniques to promote effective coping and personal growth. It emphasizes wellness and often involves shorter therapy sessions.
Sessions typically run for 45-50 minutes. Occasionally, they may extend to a full 60 minutes, with the additional time often reserved for your therapist to welcome you and then promptly record the session while the details are still fresh.
Distinguishing between these three professions may be challenging, primarily because of their education level and clinical focus, which can lead to significant variations in their capabilities and charges.
A psychiatrist with an M.D. degree is a medical doctor specializing in mental health. While they can offer therapy, their primary focus is diagnosis and medication prescribing.
On the other hand, a psychologist with a Ph.D. specializes in diagnosing and treating mental health through therapy. Due to high demand, they often emphasize diagnosis, with or without brief therapy, or providing treatment for individuals requiring extensive long-term therapy. Psychologists do not prescribe medication.
A psychotherapist holding a master's degree or higher specializes in offering counselling or psychotherapy. They do not conduct diagnoses or prescribe medication.
